Hey--I was just thinking the same thing yesterday as I was fishing wet flies for the first time. I'm a new angler, and thought the whole setup was rather awkward.
I think fly fishers like doing things the hard way. If the fishing were designed to be easy, why are the reels so hard to reel in? My guess: since trout are often so small, you have to make the process of catching them and landing them an inherent challenge... I'll leave you with an image... Me, a novice, standing knee deep in a stream with a pile of floating line drifting around my legs, an 8 1/2 foot rod with a 12 foot leader held high above my head in my right hand, a net in my left hand swiping at the water. The leader is traversing the distance from the tip of the rod to a medium sized trout via the space between my legs, through which the fish just swam.
Simple answer !
If you have travelled half way around the world and all you could carry in your backpack was a 4 piece fly rod. You get to your destination and discover that the most likely way you will catch fish is to get the fly deep. I see the fly rod as the ultimate and most versitile fishing tool. I this day and age of mass consumerism, it is a comfort to think that my trusty fly rod can catch me fish in so many different situations. Sometimes less is more. Nick Reygaert |
