Why I use Barbless Flies...Friday, June 15. 2007Comments

I once blacked out momentarily after being clunked in the top of the head by a 1/2 oz. rattling bass jig, which no longer rattled afterward due to the rattles failing to survive the encounter. After something like that happens to you, you no longer fear a wayward little fly. If I ever manage to purchase a driftboat, you'll be welcome to ride along.

Hawgdaddy and fessie,
I am most appreciative of your gracious offers to accompany you on your virtual driftboats. It sounds like a plan. I have a new virtual rod (F.E. Thomas 7'6" 5wt), a beautiful virtual Hardy Perfect reel that matches it, and the most delicate Phoenix 5dt virtual silk line. How about this weekend? We could drift the virtual AuSable in MI or, and I like this idea, the virtual Buller in New Zealand. I'll tie up some virtual flies for each. Thanks again. See you both virtually soon, Reed
Sounds great! I virtually fish New Zealand virtually every weekend, so I won't even have to change my tight virtual schedule.

Damn! I have plans for this weekend. Seems like every time a terrific offer of this type comes along I virtually have no time.
Reed,
I found this story both intriguing in some aspects and a mirror image of my own casting deficiencies. Luckily I have never been on trial for ignorant fishing related homicides, but I have definitely ran off many good friends while attempting the 'perfect cast'. Perfect casting is some form of art, an artistic talent in which I lack. If I consider my own casting mishaps as art, I would say that I am more of an abstract person. Let's just say there is no safe place within a spools length of me. When I am fishing alone things are even worse. I once got a large top water lure hung in a tree and buried an entire treble hook into my abdomen upon trying to recover the lure. There was no way to remove it without some form of operation. I had caught several fish that evening and wanted to continue that trend. Amazingly I had a very sharp pocket knife in my right pocket which would be used as a scalpel after placing my rod on the ground in front of me. Several minutes and holes later, it was safely removed and I returned to casting to both the fish and trees regards, Insane
Insane,
Well, you've earned your nickname. I assume it's a nickname, but with Alabama naming conventions it may not be. I always assumed that self-mutilation, while as kinky as a store-bought leader, would not be an integral part of my fishing experience. Obviously I was missing something. (Shudder!) Hawgdaddy, Insane scares me! Reed
Reed,
I'm proof that you can learn to live with fear. Working with Insane has taught me that. A faint but persistent twitch in my right eye brow is the only visible clue to the cloud of fear I live under, but I live still! Nathan
Nathan,
Just one more question then -- Is Insane allowed out at night? Reed
He shouldn't be, but who's going to stop him?
Beware the Insane!!!
I think that should be a slogan for a bumper sticker. Maybe I will add that to the latest and greatest tvangler decal...hhmmm....(wheels turning, light fluttering) Hawgdaddy, I know both where you live and where you cubicle dwells (pretty much in the pit of hell along with mine, just give me back my stapler!).....so watch yourself or both eye brows will never cease to quiver!
