KB,
I see that I pulled a quote [1] but left the footnote. You, however, asked the question the quote was intended to forestall. "In birds, the colors ultraviolet, blue, and green originate from feather microstructure rather than pigmentation." The yellows above are the result of the pigment (dyes). The yellow dye seems to be the strongest reflector of UVA. Whether this is because of the dye-stuff or the mordant, I do not know, but I would tend toward dye-stuff. I will include in the next entry "Body Materials", the wonders of early dyes and mordants (e.g., urine) for their UV reflective properties. So, to answer your question, natural feathers may be yellow in pigmentation, but be structurally able to reflect UV. Blue feathers have no pigmentation but refract light because of the unique microlayers of the feather structure. I will add some photos of pheasant skins which show iridescent yellow (actually microlayered "gold") reflecting UV. Warm regards, Reed
Very interesting article Reed. Being a deer hunter of sorts, I am somewhat familiar with this subject. There are several do's and don'ts when it comes to washing your camo. Using regular detergent will cause you to glow like a nightlight while you are sitting in the woods. However, you can use the UV protectant wash to reduce the Ultraviolet effects and improves your stealth capabilities. At least that's what the experts say.... I tend to think that there is something to all of this, but I'm not really sure how much.
I never really put a great deal of thought in the effects of UV reflection on my tying materials though. Maybe that's why I never catch anything... I hope all is well with you, and I enjoyed the article as always! God Bless, Insane
Dear Insane,
Regarding the subject of camo and UV, Atsko and other manufacturers of UV diminishing agents are confusing two effects. "Reflected UV", which is what my articles are about, would have no effect on deer as they do not have vision in the 400nm range or below; and "UV fluorescence" takes wavelengths
Reed,
I see what you mean. But what I'm worried about is, in the old days folks used things like, say, yellowhammer feathers in their flies. The feathers may have naturally reflected UV. These days, we use dyed hen feathers as a substitute because the yellowhammers are protected. Maybe the yellow hen feathers don't reflect as much UV or don't reflect it in the same way. You see where I'm headed here, right? What happens when a protected yellowhammer innocently lands on a branch right in front of Insane, and I'm the only one there to stop him from doing the unthinkable in an honest if misguided attempt to improve his fishing? I'm scare, Reed, very scared. hawgdaddy
SSSHHHHHH!!!!
Now the Fed's will be onto me...At least you didn't tell them that the yellowhammer tastes like chicken! Reed, Maybe I should get a refund on my super duper UV camo guard detergent...or whatever it's called. Don't worry, it's not all your fault. After field testing said product, I have come to the conclusion that deer can't see UV reflection in clothing. Bambi never even flinched, not even after delicately basting him in my secret marinade... Insane
Reed,
You may be on to something here. Saturday I will perform a test or two involving fresh urine and dry flies. I will try peeing on the fly right before casting and see if that helps. |
